Latin Artist of the Month for January 2025
Enrique Iglesias is an influential Spanish singer-songwriter. Born in in Madrid, Spain, Iglesias grew up with a popular Spanish singer as a father, Julio Iglesias. Iglesias began his music career in Toronto under the fake surname Martinez, not wanting to use his famous surname to push his career.
Iglesias made his debut album titled, Enrique Iglesias, with Fonovisa record label in 1995. The album was a hit, and sold over a million units in its first three months and eventually won Iglesias a Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Performance. His second studio album Vivir released in 1997 and then his third album Cosas del Amor in 1998. In those two years Iglesias performed in his first major tours which sold out stadiums in Mexico, Argentina, and the U.S.
It was in 1999, where Iglesias would begin crossing over into the English music market, promarialy by performing with popular artists like Ricky Martin, Shakira and more. However his biggest success was his sing;e Bailamos, which was a part of the soundtrack for Will Smith’s movie Wild Wild West.
Iglesias’s biggest break within the English market would be his performance at the Super Bowl XXXIV halftime show where Howard Stern criticized his performance. Iglesias soon after appeared on Stern’s radio broadcast to sing unplugged and shut down Stern’s criticisms, which only gained him even more popularity.
His career continued to climb well into the 2000s and 2010s, collaborating with more artists within and outside the Latin pop scene. In total, Iglesias released 12 studio albums with Final (Vol. 1) and Final (Vol. 2) being his latest releases. Iglesias has sold over 70 million records worldwide and is considered to be one of the best selling latin music artists.
