Exercise and Dementia: Essential for Prevention?

Dementia is something that has been a problem for a while to say the least, especially for those who are at genetic risk of dementia. However, recent findings may show that physical fitness may be the key in reducing the risk of and possibly preventing dementia from occurring. According to News 15, “The study revealed that exercise boosts blood flow, enhances immune cell function, and increases energy metabolism in these critical brain areas. These improvements are pivotal for maintaining learning and memory capabilities.”

It goes without saying that exercise and a proper fitness regime are essential for maintaining and keeping your body in a healthy state. Keeping in touch with your doctor and discussing what a good regime may be for you. Physical fitness and exercise aren’t the only thing to consider, however, as maintaining a good diet as well as good mental health is important as well. According to research posted by BMC, “Evidence presented demonstrates that nutrition plays a pivotal role in brain health and dementia prevention. The Mediterranean and MIND diets have shown particularly promising results, with the latter associated with up to a 53% reduction in AD risk when strictly followed.”

Essentially, while exercise is without a doubt in good interest and beneficial, it’s not the only thing that works to prevent dementia. Finding enjoyable physical activities and maintaining a good diet and mental health is all key significantly reducing risk of dementia. It is also recommended to speak to a qualified expert on what activities and regime should be practiced.
