Yesterday, I had the privilege of traveling to Rutgers University to meet with Pastors Cliffe Knechtle and his son Stuart. These two men have become some of the most influential pastors in the nation, known for their decades of work visiting college campuses and tackling the toughest, most pressing questions students wrestle with. Their reach extends far beyond the campuses they visit – through social media, they’ve connected with millions, sparking conversations about life, truth, and faith.
Given everything that has unfolded in our country over the past couple of weeks, it was no surprise that the questions raised were both raw and profound. Students asked about mortality, morality, and mental health – subjects that hit close to home for many. One of the biggest takeaways for me was their reminder that people notice the consistency of your faith, especially in difficult seasons. When others see unwavering trust in God despite adversity, it becomes a powerful testimony – one that sparks a desire in others to pursue that same steadfast faith in their own lives.
Stuart Knechtle shared a quote from Martin Luther that left a lasting impression on me:
“You cannot keep birds from flying over your head, but you can keep them from building a nest in your hair.”
In other words, we can’t always control the thoughts, doubts, or chaos that swirl around us, but we do have control over what we allow to take root in our hearts and minds. We live in a fallen world where brokenness is everywhere. Yet, even in the middle of it, we are not powerless – we don’t have to let negativity, fear, or evil define us. Instead, we can choose to remain grounded, faithful, and focused on the hope God gives.
Now, more than ever, the world needs light-bearers. Keep shining, keep standing firm, and continue being a light in the lives of others.
