Fashion Is a Way to “Fake It Till You Make It”

Do you remember the first time you put on a business casual outfit to go into the office?

It probably felt like you were just roleplaying as an adult, never feeling quite right in your own clothes. Maybe you’ve felt that way on other occasions, like wearing an evening gown or a suit — dressed for the part, but not entirely yourself. That’s the thing about clothes, they give you the freedom to become any version of yourself you choose.

The power of fashion is one that not many people utilize. It is a way to fake a certain confidence for moments when you might have none. Clothes can physically make you feel more capable. If you are dressed the part, then you feel like you belong in the position that you are in. It can mentally prepare your brain to enter whatever situation is at hand.

It also conveys the message to others that you are prepared. Looking good, or looking “the part,” shows people that they can trust you. Others will perceive you as more capable and, in turn, will interact with you as if you know exactly what you’re doing — even if you’re still figuring it out yourself.

Clothes aren’t just decoration, they are armor or tools to express to the world the person you are trying to become. They can give you a sense of security when you may have none. Whether that be a sharp blazer for a big meeting or a bold lip on a hard day, clothes can truly be transformative.

It may feel inauthentic to dress up, but you’re not pretending — you are practicing. Trying on confidence can eventually lead to the real thing. So, put on your best look and strut confidently into your next endeavor.
