On September 14th, 2025, former boxing world champion Ricky Hatton was found dead in his home by his manager, Paul Speak. Based on the report from the coroners and the statements of Paul Speak, the death was caused by hanging, seemingly a suicide.
Ricky Hatton, also known as “The Hitman”, “The People’s Champion”, and “The Pride of Hyde”, was a professional British boxer who competed for a total of 15 years in the ring. He had his boxing ring run between 1997 and 2012. During his run, he became a world champion in the light-welterweight division multiple times, and when he retired, he became a boxing promoter and trainer for new talent. When he retired, he had an incredible record of 45 wins and 3 losses, with 32 of his wins by knockout.
Ricky Hatton was a legend of the ring and one of the most popular boxers of all time in the United Kingdom. His first defeat in his entire career was to Floyd Mayweather Jr., another legend of the sport. Another opponent of his, Pacquiao, had this to say after hearing of Hatton’s death, “He was not only a great fighter inside the ring but also a brave and kind man in life,” he continues, “Ricky fought bravely, not just in the ring, but in his journey through life. He truly had a good fight, and we are all blessed to have been part of his wonderful journey.”
Across the globe, many fans and former opponents have come out and shown their grief for the loss and paid their respects to the man. The world lost a legend of the sport on that day, and it is sad to hear that it seemed to be his own decision. May he rest in peace.
