Latin Artist of the Month for September 2025
Gilberto Santa Rosa Cortés is a Puerto Rican bandleader and singer of salsa and bolero. Born in Santurce, Puerto Rico, Cortes grew an interest in music during his school years, stepping into the music industry as a backup singer with the Mario Ortiz Orchestra before being recruited as the lead singer for the La Grande Orchestra.
After two years of training, Cortes began recortimg various singles with orchestras including the Tommy Olivencia Orchestra and the Willie Rosario orchestra. He would also form his own band with Combo Records and release a variety of hit singles, including Good Vibrations, De amor y salsa, Punto de vista, and more.
One of his biggest achievements was becoming the first tropical salsa singer to have a concert at the Carnegie Hall Theater. All the way up to the present Cortes continues to sing live in concerts across the world. His dedication to his craft has led him being awarded with the ASCAP Latin Heritage Award, Lo Nuestro Award, and six Grammy Awards.
