It all began with 28-year old Trinidaddian woman, Sandra Costilla—the first alleged woman to be brutally murdered by Rex Heuermann. Her remains, located by two hunters, were found in the woods of a city in Long Island—and it was through a strand of hair found in her shirt that detectives were able to trace the crime back to the 62-year-old killer.
Maureen Brainard-Barnes was the second victim of a long list of women who were murdered at the hands of Heuermann. Brainard-Barnes went missing sometime around 2007, and she was the first woman in the case that Heuermann had actually been charged with murdering as she died due to strangulation before having her remains dumped at Gilgo Beach. These findings led to the discovery of a gruesome pattern of murders in which Heuermann strangled his victims and left their remains along the Long Island beach. In some cases, Heuermann went as far as dismembering the women he killed. Amber Lynn Costello, Megan Watermann, Jessica Taylor, Valerie Mack, and Melissa Barthelemy were more women who were tied to the case. The murder findings spanned from the years 1993-2011 with the final victim to be discovered being Karen Vergata, a 34-year-old mother who was not identified until 2023.
And it looks like the serial killer is finally admitting to the gruesome murders as he pleaded guilty to the deaths of all eight women. When asked about how he committed the murders, Heuermann replied that he killed the women through strangulation while adding, after a few names, that he dismembered them and dumped their remains near the beach. The admission struck the awe of the courtroom as the serial killer remained emotionless while hearing the names listed by the prosecutors. The relatives of the victims were taken aback, and even Heuermann’s own daughter, Victoria, was drawn to tears after hearing her father’s chilling confession.
Following Heuermann’s guilty plea, the merciless 62-year-old murderer could be facing three consecutive life sentences as he is not expected to be set free within the remainder of his lifetime. The tragic case took over four decades for justice to finally be served, and while the lives of the innocent victims were wrongfully taken away, the families of those individuals can leave in peace knowing that their loved one’s killer will finally be thrown in the slammer.
