New York state Judge Curtis Farber declared a mistrial on Harvey Weinstein’s sexual misconduct charges, as he was accused of assaulting former actress Miriam Haley in 2006, along with several other charges and went into retrial recently.
In the retrial on Wednesday, jurors reached a conclusion, stating that Weinstein was found guilty of the charge stemming from Haley, however has been found not guilty on a charge springing from a charge on allegedly assaulting Kaja Sokala in 2002, a young, aspiring actress at the time. A third charge, stemming from an alleged assault of aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013, was still inconclusive and what drove Curtis to call the mistrial in the first place.
The proceedings are reported to not have gone very smoothly, with many cases of infighting and deliberation occurring. According to Haley “The defense set a very disruptive and chaotic tone from the very beginning of this trial, which I suppose was meant to distract the jury from undeniable facts,” Haley said “And I’m so grateful they saw through the nonsense and the antics.”
Many others, according to Farber reported the same, stating that there were threats being thrown between jurors, with many saying that “I can’t go back in there with the other jurors.” Farber confirmed the same stating that there was hostilities between jurors. The jury foreman reportedly excused himself from deliberations, stating that one juror had threatened him, saying “Oh, we will see you outside” and is concerned for his own safety. Farber states that the infighting sounded like “schoolyard nonsense,” to him.
