Has Gov. Newsom Changed His Mind on Running for President?

Gavin Newsom, the current governor of California, appears to have changed his stance on whether he will run for president.

Previously, Newsom had repeatedly stated he was not interested in the position. In 2022 he told the San Francisco Chronicle that he has “sub-zero interest” in a presidential bid and later confirmed to Politico that he would support Biden if he seeked reelection. And, in July 2024, he endorsed Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee.

Since then, however, he seems to have reconsidered.

Amid the protests happening in Los Angeles, and Trump’s controversial move to deploy the National Guard, Newsom has positioned himself as a leader in the opposition. He has been making headlines recently criticizing Donald Trump and the way he is operating the country.

In an interview with Fox11 Los Angeles Newsom said in reference to Trump: “He’s incapable now of even a train of thought. He’s making things up, and he’s putting people’s lives at risk.”

Newsom has debated with many conservative voices on his podcast and has intensified his critiques against Trump. He has secured a role as a prominent vocal leader in the Democratic resistance, and many political analysts believe this is a move to position himself for a 2028 presidential bid.

Newsom’s term as California governor concludes in January of 2027, and it’s looking like he is laying the groundwork for a potential presidential campaign.

In a profile published in The Wall Street Journal, Newsom said, “I’m not thinking about running, but it’s a path that I could see unfold.”

With all eyes on the California governor, now is the time for Newsom to continue speaking out against Trump and secure a voice for when election season rolls around.
