Has Politics Embraced Profanity?

Over the course of history, politicians are the members of society who have been entrusted to represent the people and their best interests. With this immense responsibility, many politicians chose to carry themselves with dignity and respect towards their fellow politicians. However, in recent years, profanity and vulgarity have become more commonplace with politicians.

15 years ago, a major politician, like at the time Vice President Joe Biden, swearing “This is a big f—— deal,” caused major waves due to profanity from the leader of a country being highly unusual at the time. But now in 2025, it feels like it is hard to find a politician who doesn’t use profanity in public.

President Donald Trump has been one of the most vocal politicians when it comes to the use of profanity. He has called alleged drug smugglers “sons of b——-s,” and has called Haiti and other African nations “sh—hole countries”. He has used profanity on other occasions as well.

While the comment by Joe Biden 15 years ago was an accident and was never meant to be heard by the public, the language of Donald Trump seems to be a deliberate decision to make him stand out as a politician and fight against what he sees as political correctness.

Ever since Donald Trump broke down the wall on the use of profanity, politicians from both parties have seemingly embraced it and are using it. Vice President Kamala Harris has been on record saying “these mother——s are crazy” in relation to the Trump administration. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer has said the government cannot “f—- around” with the release of the Epstein files.

Vulgarity has become the new sign of passion in American politicians, showing that they are willing to cast aside the decorum expected of their position to express their passion regarding a subject.
