Has Social Media Changed How Music Spreads?

In our modern age, social media has become one of the most prominent methods for people to interact and discover the latest content. Apps such as TikTok have made a name for themselves with their easy-to-use content creation tools, short-form video format, and high-end algorithm that curates an individual’s feed to match their interests.

Social media allows anyone to share their daily activities with the world, record videos set to catchy music to gain views, or share their opinions with the world. This ease of access to other people has enabled them to share their interests at an incredible speed. One of the most prominent examples of this is music.

Think to yourself: how often have you heard a new song through a video or social media post that had nothing to do with the original song?

Personally, I have found most of my favorite songs not by following artists or searching by genre, but by hearing the songs attached to social media posts and adding them to my playlist. Often, I will discover whole new genres of music I have never heard of before on a social media post, completely unrelated to the genre itself.

It has become a popular trend across social media to include music in the background of videos to keep viewers engaged with the content of the post. As a result of this trend, songs included in these trends can reach a much larger audience who would normally not be exposed to such music.

Social media has had a noteworthy influence on how the latest music reaches new audiences. A song with a catchy hook or a distinctive sound can become the soundtrack to a new viral trend or meme, catapulting its popularity up the charts.

Thanks to social media, new music and songs of the past have a chance to find new life in the trends of the modern era.
