Underground Artist of the Month for December 2022

Bio

Born Isimeme Udu in Concord, North Carolina, the underground, now popular music star had big academic plans for the future. After receiving a bachelor’s degree in biology from Spelman University, she had her sights set on a career in the medical field, which led her to pursue a Master’s degree from Dartmouth College. Although she was seeking a career in the medical field, the world of music still lingered in her mind.

Udu has a history of loving and pursuing music. While in middle school, she participated in her school’s choir. She eventually began to play around with music-creating software while attending college as a “stress relieving mechanism,” as she recounters. Around the time she began playing around with the software, she began to realize her love for 80’s synth music. It wasn’t long until she released songs like “Gimme All Ur Luv” and “Jacob,” which gained popularity over the pandemic. However, it wasn’t until the release of her most current song, “girlfriend,” that she gained extreme popularity.

Her sound can be described as “synth 80’s indie pop” as her songs’ upbeat and playful sound are uniquely similar to 80’s pop with a mix of 2012 indie pop most common in the indie sleaze era once popular in the 2010s.
