Gen Z is a generation that does not care about expectations, especially when it comes to fashion. They are constantly pushing the norms of what is considered fashionable– with oversized clothing, chunky shoes and loud accessories. Yes, this is a push to embrace individuality, but it is also a way to fight against restrictive beauty standards.
Traditional standards are all about proportion and symmetry. Articles advising “how to dress for your body type” are frequently seen in magazines, and other generations seem to obsess over making their body seem the most “flattering.” But, young people are pushing back on this by asking–why are flattering clothes better?
The answer is conforming. And Gen Z has never been the generation to do that. They are embracing what older generations might call “wrong” proportions. This includes overlining lips, large silhouettes and intentionally awkward make-up. It isn’t a want to embrace ugliness but an act of rebellion, a way to reset the standards of what is beautiful.
This is the generation growing up on social media, and, as a result of that, a generation that has a scent for authenticity. They are able to scope out what is being pushed on them or sold to them, and they are actively fighting against it.
Gen Z loves asymmetrical clothing, deliberately chaotic styling and a complete embrace of uniqueness. No longer are they striving to blend in but are actively trying to be different and look interesting.
The impact extends beyond a single generation and is visible almost everywhere—brands are casting models with distinctive features, influencers are gaining fame by standing out and personal style is more diverse than ever.
Other generations may scoff, calling it a phase or a performative act, but the reality is that young people today aren’t buying into restrictive standards. In a world that has profited off of insecurity, Gen Z’s act of defiance is about freedom.
