Anytime I am doing anything boring, such as taking a walk or doing household chores, I always have to have my favorite music in my ears. I had a job once, where I cleaned a hospital, and when it got quiet, and the visitors went home, I had music in my ears. I would be dancing to Disney, pop, and all sorts of genres. It helped me focus. I could have it in my ears and just be completely somewhere else, and my job or chores at home would be finished very fast.
I think the types of music that help us do chores, though, are dependent on the person. Some people only like instrumental, jazz, and some people might like rock or metal, something to bang their head to while they vacuum up dirt, and in my case, cat hair. Music is like a door to a whole new world. What really gets me in the mood is Korean-pop and Japanese-pop, even though I don’t know what they are saying, it just has that power to make you want to dance.
I use the broom as my microphone and slide around, not even noticing what was around me. As a neurodivergent, I also have to make sure my things are neat. I think that music is felt differently as a neurodivergent, too. If you can relate to a song, that is what helps you get through those tough-to-reach places while cleaning.
The best part is when you are just exhausted from clearing. You’ve been doing it all day, and then a song that is from childhood or something that you haven’t heard in years comes on, and you get excited, and it is just like energy surging through you, and you can continue and finish the job.
Music is so magical and sometimes soothing or nostalgic, but I think no matter what, even if the house feels too big to clean all of it, with a little bit of music, you can finish the job and in the end have a job well done.
