Have you ever been playing through a Pokémon game and thought it was too easy? Since the games are intended for anyone of any age to enjoy, the difficulty is usually toned down for kids to have an easier time. However, for those who seek a challenge, there is an unofficial set of rules one can abide by to turn a light-hearted adventure into a high-stakes gauntlet. It is called the Pokémon Nuzlocke.
The challenge got its name after a webcomic was made in 2010, detailing the journey of a player using a specific set of rules. Since then, Pokémon Nuzlockes have exploded online and have even spawned many YouTubers and gamers who specialize in them. They are widely known for making the games harder and more exciting to watch.
Although there is no written set of rules that one must follow, a proper Nuzlocke almost always consists of three rules. 1: The player can only catch the first Pokémon they encounter in each new route. 2: If a Pokémon faints in battle, it is considered “dead” and must be discarded from the team. 3: The player must nickname all their Pokémon to strengthen the bonds with them. With these rules in place, each battle has the potential of being your Pokémon’s last. Every weakness and strength must be accounted for, which often makes for interesting strategies and tense moments. Extra rules can also be implemented to make it even tougher, like not being able to use potions in battle or having a level cap for each gym trainer. I have done a Nuzlocke before, and it truly makes for many heartbreaking losses and satisfying triumphs.
With all that being said, the most important thing about Nuzlockes is that they are supposed to be fun. There’s no harm in breaking the rules or making exceptions if it means you’ll enjoy it more. Next time you decide to play a Pokémon game, give these rules a try. You may find that they make the games much more exciting!
