How to Make Politics More Engaging for Everyone

“I am not into politics.” This phrase has become more prevalent in recent years,  and it is said mainly by young adults and teens exhausted by the heated discussions at the family table and everywhere else. This lack of care could be considered worrisome for the future, but it’s hard to blame the younger generation for not joining the constant mudslinging and moral grandstanding. This is why there needs to be a change in political engagement that supports and challenges people’s ability to think critically.

One suggestion that would be a great start is looking for the latest news on truly unbiased sites. Big news stations like Fox and CNN may provide the same information on current events, but there will always be a lean towards their political standings. Plenty of online sites only give the facts of what is happening in the world, which allows the viewer to digest the information and come up with their thoughts.

Another suggestion that could go a long way is to remove the consideration of parties when discussing topics. Most arguments about sensitive topics turn into blind support of one side over the other, which does not encourage individual thinking. Some may admit it or not, but all political parties can be somewhat right and wrong about various subjects. It is better to come up with your thoughts on each topic and decide what is right and wrong.

These few suggestions will hopefully reignite conversations among the disinterested and bring about change that helps everyone. We must encourage individual thinking and understanding to help people care about what should be done for our present and future.
