Here’s a shocking confession from a fashion article: I don’t want you to notice what I’m wearing. Unless, of course, you’re also into anime— then by all means, please say something. I’m a nerd, and I’m not hiding that. But beyond that, if my outfit catches your attention, I’ve failed my mission.
My fashion logic is simple: avoid discomfort, eye contact and real pants. Leggings, sweatpants and oversized hoodies make up most of my wardrobe. The anime merch is the only “statement” piece I own—usually socks, a tee, hoodie, or an accessory that seems to say, “Yes, I watched 10 episodes last night and I have no regrets.” It’s the little spark I add just for fun. It’s not exactly stylish, but it makes me happy.
Yes, I own a few “real” clothes. I’m not a total recluse. There’s a small corner of my closet reserved for weddings, formal events, interviews or the rare day when I have to look like a functioning adult. But most of the time? I’m dressing to survive the day. And honestly? That should be enough.
A second glance? A compliment on how I look? Honestly, that sounds like my worst nightmare. I’m not trying to stand out; I’m trying to blend in. My clothing is more than just something I throw on—it’s my armor. It works as a shield to hide me from attention and from the anxiety of being looked at too closely. If you catch me in public, I probably look like a mix of “exhausted college student” and “up way too late watching Crunchyroll.” Both are accurate, to be fair.
Fashion, for some people, is about expression and creativity. They want to be seen, stylish and Instagram-ready. And that’s great. But for some of us, feeling good in our clothes means not being noticed. It means dressing in a way that makes the world feel a little less overwhelming.
I find joy in the little things. The anime hoodie, the character pin, the subtle acknowledgement to a fandom that feels like home. If someone picks up on that and wants to talk about it? Then, yes—I’m totally game.
But outside of that, if you didn’t notice what I wore today, then good. That’s exactly how I planned it.
