If you haven’t listened to Gen Neo’s music, you’re missing out (Op-Ed)

There have been a lot of great new R&B artists trending now; one of these artists is Gen Neo. For those of you who aren’t familiar with him, Gen Neo is a Singaporean singer-songwriter, producer, and composer. He is known for his singles “Mine,” “Stay,” and “Same Mistakes.”

Gen Neo was born on June 18, 1989, in Singapore. He attended one of the most prestigious music colleges in the country: Berklee College of Music. He is signed to Maps Entertainment, and he started his career as a producer.

I first discovered Gen Neo on Instagram. I was just scrolling away, and I stumbled across a clip of his music video for his single “Stay.” I was immediately captivated by not just the visuals but the song itself. So, I left Instagram for a bit and visited his YouTube and Spotify channels, and I have been in love with his music ever since.

The first three songs I listened to were “Stay,” “Unless We Try,” and “Called it Love.” What took my breath away was his voice! This music prodigy has an exceptional tenor voice. It’s deep, passionate, velvety, powerful, and smooth perfect for R&B music!

As for his instruments, you can tell he is heavily influenced by 90’s R&B. When I listen to his music I feel like I’m listening to old-school R&B with a dash of contemporary. His pianos, pads, and guitars scream 90’s R&B louder than his voice and they are all stunning.

His lyrics are mostly about love. They are super relatable, catchy, and heartfelt. This R&B king knows how to make grown-folk music! You can listen to him when you are both heartbroken and in love. He utilizes both R&B and Trap drums above gorgeous-sounding R&B pads and pianos. His voice above this masterpiece is just… chef’s kiss! He reminds me a lot of Giveon, Bryson Tiller, and Bruno Mars.

So, folks if you haven’t listened to him already please do so. I promise that you will fall in love with his soulful voice, lyrics, and instrumentals. I recommend listening to “Stay” and “Same Mistakes” first!
