If Your Boyfriend Doesn’t Think Your Outfit Is Weird, It’s Time to Step Up Your Wardrobe

If you’re anything like me, when you step out of your wardrobe, after crafting your latest outfit, you usually receive some side eye from your boyfriend. Sometimes even the occasional: “What are you wearing?” That’s usually how I know I’ve put together a good outfit. Fashion should always raise some eyebrows.

Clothes are one of the best ways to explore your self-expression. The weirder, in my opinion, the better. Taking risks with what you wear shows personality and creativity. Playing it safe may be the easier option, but I think it’s more fun to turn heads.

We all love a good basic piece, and predictable outfits aren’t always a bad thing – but it usually makes your style sort of invisible. When I receive a nod of approval from my boyfriend, I usually know it’s time to start pushing boundaries again. Fashion should be surprising, and a little unpredictable, not just safe and forgettable.

Those confused looks from friends or family are not a bad thing – and usually mean the opposite. They show that you’re trying something new. Those reactions are a playful reminder that you’re doing fashion right by taking risks and dressing only for you.

Just think about your favorite fashion icons, like David Bowie or Lady Gaga. They’re remembered for their looks because they were weird, because they were redefining. And it wasn’t just about clothes, it was a statement that they aren’t seeking anyone’s approval. Sometimes weird is legendary.

Fashion shouldn’t please everyone – especially not your boyfriend. So don’t be afraid to take risks, be weird and dress for you, and you only. Clothes are a playground that should be explored. Take those looks of dislike as a sign you’re doing it right.
