Having a smartphone that can make calls, check emails, surf the web, give you directions, translate different languages and do just about everything else you need when out in the world is a major convenience that has opened doors for a lot of people to expand their lives. While these features are amazing for what they do, a huge downside is that it causes humans to depend 100% on their smartphone for everything. So when that phone dies, it makes the person using it 100% helpless.
Since smartphones are so popular, everyone is somewhat dependent on the little computer in their pocket, so there’s no shame in being helpless without one. If anything, it can be a wakeup call to learn how to read a map, memorize the numbers that are most important to you, learn how to read a compass and know where your local library and internet cafes are should you need access to a computer.
It may also be a sign to diversify the electronics in your inventory. There has been a shift away from smartphones as people are ordering Barbie flip phones and beginning to use MP3 players again. Same with kindles, as people who like to read are buying devices dedicated strictly to reading to minimize the distractions that come with having all your favorite books on a smartphone.
There is a balance to be found, as the more electronics you have the more space you need to keep everything with you, but that might be a fair price to pay so when your music player dies, you don’t lose access to your phone, compass and other things that keep you alive and connected with the world.
