“Inside Out 2” Breaks All-Time Record At Global Box Office

A popular Pixar animated sequel has recently broken a global box office record. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” became Hollywood’s most-grossing animated film of all time worldwide. The film finished at the global box office with $1.462 billion on Tuesday, grossing $601 million domestically and $861.8 million internationally.

“Inside Out 2”, directed by Kelsey Mann, is the sequel to the highly acclaimed 2015 film of the same name. Viewers once again follow the stories of Riley as she enters into a new phase of her young life as a teenager. Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, and Disgust now have to navigate this new phase all the while newer and stranger emotions make themselves known.

Since its release earlier this summer “Inside Out 2” achieved a massive amount of success, crossing the $1 billion mark in just 19 days. The movie even beat out the previous summer blockbuster hit Barbie, which grossed $1.446 billion.

“Inside Out 2” and its success is a much-needed win for Pixar, considering the animation studio’s previous projects performing badly at the box office, including “Lightyear” and “Elemental”. In an early July interview with Time, the studio’s Chief Creative Officer Pete Doctor hinted that the studio may have had to undergo serious changes if “Inside Out 2” didn’t perform favorably. Thankfully, the movie blew everyone’s expectations out of the water.

“If [Inside Out 2] doesn’t do well at the theater, I think it just means we’re going to have to think even more radically about how we run our business,” said Doctor. “So far Pixar has built a business around pretty large budgets. It allows us to make a lot of mistakes and take risks, and if it doesn’t work, we can still go back and fix it.”

The latest achievement for “Inside Out 2” is beating “Frozen 2” off its number-one spot as the top-grossing animated film. Now “Frozen 2” sits at number two with the

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” right behind it. Right under that are “Frozen,” Pixar’s “Incredibles 2,”  Illumination’s “Minions,”  “Toy Story 4,” “Despicable Me 3” and “Finding Dory”.

While “Inside Out 2” continues to profit at the global box office, it technically sits second to “The Lion King” remake from 2019, however that has been left out due to Disney claiming it is a live-action remake, despite using CGI for a majority of the film.
