Ever since sports betting has been legalized in several states across the country, it has been a massive hit, earning millions of dollars each month for online betting sites such as DraftKings and FanDuel. They offer a way to potentially earn money while watching your favorite sports team compete. Unfortunately, the temptation of profit has also been felt by the players, with several professional athletes having been caught rigging games to win money from the bets placed on them. With events like these happening, can athletes be trusted to maintain their integrity?
It is a simple scam to pull off. Approach a professional athlete, tell them what circumstances need to occur within the match, then offer them a major cut of the profits. If done correctly, both the scammer and the athlete can walk away with thousands of dollars, and no one will ever know of their ill deeds. However, with the legalization of sports betting, the surveillance of where bets are being placed is under significantly more scrutiny.
Thanks to sports betting being conducted officially, it allows law enforcement to easily find suspicious activity within betting traffic and provide justice to those who would have lost money on a rigged match. This has already been proven as dozens of athletes have already been caught by federal investigators allegedly rigging games to make certain bets win.
There is also an issue that sports betting has not been legalized universally; only certain states have legalized the practice. This means that each state has its own regulations regarding the sports betting industry, making it so that sports betting sites may focus their attention on certain states due to favorable regulations.
Sports betting has overall been a profitable endeavor for the online betting sites; however, the integrity of games is still under debate among fans. Personally, I have never been one for gambling, but if I were to bet on anything, the minimum requirement in my eyes is that the game is not rigged against me. Until further security is placed on games, you can’t be certain with sports betting that it has not been rigged by those you are betting on.
