Sony Pictures has announced that Karate Kid franchise alumni’s Ralph Macchio, 62, and Jackie Chan, 69, are set to star in a New Karate Kid movie. We all know Ralph Macchio from the very first, original film of the franchise “Karate Kid (1984)”, and Jackie Chan from the most recent “Karate Kid (2010)” starring Jaden Smith. Further details about the movie are yet to be announced, but the studio did share that the movie will premiere December 13, 2024, with Rob Lieber as the screenwriter, and Jonathan Entwisle as the director.
Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio made the announcement November 21 of last year in a short video posted on the Sony Pictures Entertainment YouTube channel. They announced in the video that they are not only starring in this new movie together, but that they are looking for someone to play the role of “the karate kid” in the movie, at the end of the video we see a link appear on the screen that reads: “karatekidcasting.com” accompanied by the voices of Jackie and Ralph in the background urging the viewers to “learn more about the role” and to submit their “audition video.”
“We are looking for the NEXT KARATE KID”, “Looking for an actor to portray Chinese or Mixed-Race Chinese and between 15-17 years old. He speaks fluent English. Conversational Mandarin is a strong plus. He’s smart, scrappy, and a skilled martial artist. Any sort of martial arts, movement, gymnastics, and/or dance experience is a strong plus. Acting experience is preferred but not required,” reads the message on the site provided by the video.
