James Gunn Is Reportedly Thinking of Two Superman TV Spinoffs

James Gunn’s “Superman,” began showing in theaters today on July 11, 2025 and according to Variety, “The latest take on ‘Superman,’ starring David Corenswet, has made a huge $22.5 million in box office previews, which is the biggest of the year so far. It beats the preview grosses for this year’s ‘Lilo & Stitch’ ($14.5 million) and is the highest of Gunn’s career, surpassing the $17.5 million for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’.” It’s without a doubt that the film will perform well on opening weekend and with this in mind, Gunn seems to have plans.

According to The Wall Street Journal, “Gunn is considering TV spin offs for characters like Mister Terrific and cub reporter Jimmy Olsen, a knowledgeable person said.” Gunn’s track record with spin off TV shows such as “Peacemaker” for example have been relatively solid, so if these ambitions come to fruition, the proposed Gun “Superman,” spinoffs may be a hit, but it won’t be without its challenges.

DC has had a shaky track record at best with its superhero adaptations. Under Gunn, it could have a good turnout, but there is a sizable amount of film and TV viewers that are growing tired of spin offs, claiming that they feel like cheap attempts at earning money as well as simply advertisements for their upcoming projects. However, there are strengths in spinoffs just as much as weaknesses, as they can provide new viewpoints into stories as well as expand upon certain characters that wouldn’t normally get as much attention and spotlight. If Gunn’s “Superman,” spinoffs get made remains to be seen, however there is much for Gunn to consider if they get greenlit.
