Japanese Retailer MUJI Opens First U.S. Food Court in New York

Japanese retailer MUJI has opened its first food court in the United States. According to Forbes, the MUJI Food Market opened its doors inside the Chelsea Market in New York City.

The food court seeks to serve guests a variety of popular Japanese food and snacks, including popular items like miso soup, onigiri , sandwiches, curries and pastries. Additionally, customers can enjoy a cup of coffee made by an AI-powered coffee maker named Jarvis.

The food market is the newest extension to the MUJI Market, which offers customers Japanese stationery, home goods, beauty products, and other products.

MUJI’s North American president Richard Rappaport expressed his excitement toward the new market, “With MUJI Food Market we’re inviting our customers and those discovering MUJI for the first time to explore and experience Japanese culture through a unique offering of food that is both traditional and unexpected.”

This new addition will add to the diverse cultures present in New York City.

“The expansion of MUJI Market to include the Food Market aims to provide customers with the full MUJI experience and have it naturally become a place of connection and community,” Rappaport said. “These are items that we think much of our New York City community will be familiar with already and likely be standouts, but additions that may be lesser known like dorayaki or Japanese pancakes, could be a surprising favorite once guests discover them.”

The MUJI Food Market opened its doors to the public on January 18, 2025, and welcomes guests from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The new market has undoubtedly become a hit with locals and tourists alike. While no other new locations have opened up, if this location does well, it is only a matter of time before MUJI expands.
