Kris Boyd, cornerback for the New York Jets, was critically injured Sunday morning in a shooting in Midtown Manhattan.
According to the New York Police Department, police officers responded to a call at about 2 a.m. outside Sei Less restaurant. When they arrived on scene, they found the 29‑year-old man with a gunshot wound to his abdomen. He was rushed to Bellevue Hospital, where he remains in critical but stable condition.
Police say the incident started off as a verbal disagreement but then escalated into violence. Sources report that two rounds were fired. After the shots, the suspect left the scene. No arrests have been made so far, and the NYPD says the investigation is ongoing.
The Jets have issued a short statement, “We are aware of the situation involving Kris Boyd and will have no further comment at this time.”
Boyd signed with the Jets in March. He hasn’t played this season and has been on injured reserve due to suffering a shoulder injury in August. Before joining the Jets, Boyd played for the Minnesota Vikings, Arizona Cardinals and Houston Texans.
Two of his teammates, linebacker Jermaine Johnson II and defensive tackle Harrison Phillips, posted on social media to ask for prayers.
“Everybody please send prayers to my brother and teammate Kris Boyd and his family!!! Lord please hold your healing hand over Kris and guide him back to health and safety,” said Johnson.
“Lord, place your mighty hand on him as he fights lord God. Guide every doctor, nurse, and surgeon who touches him lord,” said Phillips. “Give his family strength! Kris is a fighter and we’re all here for him.”
New York City’s mayor also expressed concern and encouraged the efforts to end gun violence in the city. “Although we’ve gotten shootings to historic lows in our city, we must continue to work to end gun violence,” Adams said. “Too many young lives have been tragically altered and cut short by this epidemic.”
This is a reminder that even public figures aren’t immune to violence. I hope Kris Boyd recovers fully and soon. I also hope the authorities find whoever is responsible, so justice can be made.
