Flashback Athlete of the Month for August 2025

Bio

James Anthony Abbott is an American former professional baseball pitcher. Born in Flint, Michigan, Abbot despite having only one hand was talented at football and baseball. After graduating from Flint Central High School, Abbot was selected by The Toronto Blue Jays in the 1985 Major League Baseball draft but ultimately didnt sign up.

Instead, Abbott played for the Michigan Wolverines at the University of Michigan for three years and was the first baseball player to win the James E. Sullivan Award.

Abbot began his MLB career after The California Angels selected him in the 1988 Major League Baseball draft and began playing on the team a year later. During his three years with the Angels, Abbott won the Tony Conigliaro Award and ranked in the top three and five for the  Cy Young Award and American League Rookie of the Year Award.

After his time with the Angels, Abbott played for the New York Yankees, the Chicago White Sox, the California Angels, the Chicago White Sox, and finally the Milwaukee Brewers at the end of the 90s.

By the time of his retirement following his 1999 season, Abbott had inspired many with his talent despite his disability. He even represented the United States in multiple major tournaments, including the 1988 Olympic Games, the 1987 Pan American Games, and the 1988 Baseball World Cup.
