Johnny Depp to Produce ‘The Master and Margarita’

During the Red Sea International Film Festival held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, an announcement was made that Johnny Depp plans to produce the first English feature adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov’s novel, ‘The Master and Margarita’. According to the announcement, the film is expected to begin production in late 2026.

The announcement took place this Wednesday, December 10, and was made by Johnny Depp at the Festival.  He revealed that his company, IN.2 Film, Stephen Deuters, Svetlana Dali, Stephen Malit, and Grace Loh will all assist in producing the film. The film is also being produced in a collaboration with Tribune Pictures, an independent Media company that specializes in Feature Films.

As of this time, no information has been revealed regarding who the director of the film will be or who will be in the cast lineup.

For those unaware, ‘The Master and Margarita’ is a novel written by Mikhail Bulgakov and is considered to be his masterpiece. The novel is a fantastical and satirical story that takes place in two different time periods: the first in 1930s Moscow under the rule of Stalin, and the other in ancient Jerusalem at the time of Jesus’s crucifixion.

The novel was published posthumously in 1966 after Bulgakov died of nephrosclerosis, a severe kidney disease, in 1940. In 2024, a movie adaptation of the novel was released in Russia and had great performance at the box office. The film has been released in Germany, Turkey, Italy, and other countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Interestingly, it has not been made available in the United States or the United Kingdom.

Johnny Depp and the production team working beside him are set to bring a big box office hit to the ears of English speakers across the world, and I am excited to see how the adaptation turns out when it releases.
