Kim Jong Un admits lack of basic necessities in North Korea

In a rare move, the dictator of North Korea acknowledged the poverty-stricken state in his country at a meeting this week. On Thursday, Kim Jong Un addressed his speech to the Workers’ Party of Korea and acknowledged that the disparity between countryside life and city life needs to be addressed.

“Today, failure to satisfactorily provide the people in local areas with basic necessities including condiments, foodstuff, and consumption goods has arisen as a serious political issue that our Party and government can never sidestep,” he said, according to Korean Central News Agency.

Interestingly enough, he continued to urge any government official who sat idly by as North Koreans’ quality of life continued to deteriorate to admit that they were at fault for being incapable of carrying out the Worker’s Party of Korea agenda.

However, it seems that he still chose to backfire blame on the other members of the government without acknowledging his own indulgences while North Koreans starved.

“North Korea had concentrated its resources in Pyongyang to secures support for the regime among its core population. But resources have become more scarce amid continued sanctions,” according to a South Korean Unification Ministry officer.

North Korea continues to be one of the poorest countries in the world, and although the statements made were a rare moment of integrity, it still begs the question of whether or not any real change will actually be made.
