Let’s Hear It From the Famous

Celebrities spend their entire careers consumed by the media. Every step they take, every decision they make, there is a camera waiting to record the moment and paparazzi ready to share their perspective of the story. Individuals crave the spotlight–the glamour and glory that comes with wearing the celebrity title keeps bags packed for auditions and LAX busy. However, along with the red carpet appearances and award show wins, we are seeing many celebrities turn to writing and release memoirs or autobiographies.

Name the top scandals and biggest controversies regarding our favorite celebrities. When we think about these topics of discourse, we can tie the origin of this information to usually the same source among all celebrities–the media and paparazzi. Celebrities are not only on our televisions, the movie screens, or on a concert stage, they are on the camera of the public eye at all times. A narrative regarding the celebrity can be falsely spread due to a few moments the camera caught, leading to assumptions about their character being made by the media and the public. In order to rewrite the narrative and share their story themselves, more and more celebrities are entering the world of an author.

Writing a memoir allows celebrities to do what has been done for them for most of their careers. Rather than having the media share their story or continue to spread a false narrative, many celebrities are picking up their pens and writing their truth for the world to read. Memoirs have the ability to let celebrities explore the story of their career and the personal experiences they have had throughout their time in the spotlight. We are seeing celebrities correct misconceptions that have been made about them, talk about and address scandals they have been involved in, and redefine themselves the way they would like to be perceived. Instead of accepting what has been said about them, the memoir shifts the spotlight onto their personal truths.

Paris Hilton: The “ditzy, dumb blonde girl.”

Brittany Spears: The “pop star gone crazy who shaved her head.”

Demi Moore: The “crazy, Gimme-Moore.”

Each of these women has turned these misconceptions and narratives that were spread by the media into a memoir that redefines who they are, and shares the life struggles that were not previously discussed among the public. Within all of these books, the reader receives the raw, honest truth behind the lives and careers of these women, and the experiences they had that shaped how the media perceives them. These memoirs open the public’s eyes to the traumas they have endured throughout their careers, the lessons they have learned along the way, and the human that lies underneath every celebrity title. We see who the individual is when they are not covered by the sparkling lights and lies, only the person who made every move with a camera breathing down their neck.

As we move into a world desperate for the truth, it is almost certain that more celebrities will share their stories and realities with the world. Paparazzi will always be present, and the gossip will always be going, but the power of the memoir is starting to reshape how we allow the media to portray our favorite celebrities.
