It looks like we’re all “taking accountability for ourselves” while watching Tyra Banks’ new series as we get a first-row ticket to all of the controversy and secrets that arose from the hit show America’s Next Top Model. For several years, Tyra has found herself in hot water with many of the girls as a result of the insensitivity and toxic behavior that she displayed during the show’s initial run, and many former contestants have clapped back at her for how badly she treated them in the past.
Well it looks like Tyra is finally responding to the backlash that she received—-and she isn’t holding back. In the new documentary titled Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model, Tyra spills it all as she assesses the show’s impact on female models while also addressing some of the alleged scandals that she was involved in.
In the documentary, Tyra admitted that the show “reached levels of absurdity” in an attempt to elicit engagement from viewers. She acknowledged that some of the incidents that took place on the show were deeply insensitive, and even stated that there were “some really off choices” in judgment according to an article on BBC. While Tyra does admit to some of the extremities that occurred on her show, she defended some of her actions, citing them as an attempt to teach the girls about the harsh realities of modelling and showcase how difficult and intense the industry can be.
Tyra also reflects on her iconic scene with contestant, Tiffany Richardson, in which she gave Tiffany tough love as a way to help her take responsibility for her attitude and behavior. In the documentary, Tyra admitted that her frustration with Tiffany was bigger than the actual argument itself, but rather a moment where all of her emotions came out when discussing the hardships of being an African American woman working in a relentless modeling industry. She described the scene as such an important and touching subject for her, explaining why she reacted as strongly as she did.
Many behind the scenes members and cast mates stated that Tyra’s rant was far worse than what was actually shown on TV. Allegedly, some of the other girls and crew members were scared after the affair, stating that she went too far with some of her comments. Tiffany also confirmed that the scene was worse than what was shown in a heated Instagram post where she called out Tyra for her “bully-like” behavior. Tyra admitted to going too far and took responsibility for her part during her interview regarding the incident.
Through all of the controversy that took place on the show, these incidents were only the tip of the iceberg. More behind-the-scenes drama took place, and certain scenes were cut from the show either due to their high degree of insensitivity or harmful narratives that were being promoted to viewers. Tyra’s interview in the docuseries helps clear up some of the allegations that absolutely destroy her reputation, and her ability to take accountability shows that she has grown over the years—-but it is without question that there are more details and controversies from the show that have yet to be revealed.
