Tragedy struck in Long Island, New York once again as several homes were destroyed at the hands of an unrelenting fire that resulted in multiple injuries and one fatality.
Officers responded to a call around 4:30 A.M. on February 11 in Bellmore where they learned that a victim was stuck in their house as it was being engulfed in flames. After the Bellmore Fire Department was alerted of the incident, they rushed firefighters and responders to the scene, sending at least 100 firefighters to battle the vicious fire.
While officers wanted to enter the house to save the victim, the flames were entirely too much, forcing them to operate from a distance. The fire started from the victim’s house and spread to two houses nearby, causing significant damages to at least two of the homes in the neighborhood. In fact, the two houses completely collapsed while the third home where the fire spread mainly had damage to its side.
The victim that lived in the house where the fire started succumbed to injury while the other person who lived in the home survived with injury. There were three reported injuries that resulted from the fire and only one casualty. The residents of the other homes were able to escape without any need for assistance. No firefighters were harmed at the hands of the incident, but two of the police officers that interfered were injured and transported to the hospital. The name of the individual who died in the house fire was not released.
It is unknown what exactly caused the fire as the Nassau County Fire Marshal’s Office and Nassau County Police Arson Bomb Squad are investigating how the fire started. The injured individual and police officers were taken to the hospital and treated for smoke inhalation after being surrounded by the deadly fumes. Several people described the scene as a “heavy fire” and the destruction caused by the incident proves nothing short of that.
