Mamdani Revived ‘Just Home’ Project

The ‘Just Home’ project is a government-funded program in New York City, specifically the Bronx, that provides permanent housing support and intensive services to those released from incarceration. The nationwide project was established in 2022, and its proposal for a New York City specific project was approved in Fall of 2025. However, former mayor Eric Adams placed the project on hold, due to objections from his administration and local officials.

On January 19, 2026, mayor Mamdani announced that he would proceed with the original plan for the project. The plan consists of building an 83-unit complex for supportive housing on the Jacobi Hospital campus. Formerly incarcerated individuals with severe medical needs, including both mental and physical illnesses, will be able to live at the complex and receive the care that they need. The tenants residing at the complex will have a rent-stabilized lease.

The initial project was stalled due to safety concerns regarding the former inmates. However, Mamdani also announced that The Fortune Society will be screening each possible tenant to ensure there is no risk of violence at the complex and in surrounding areas. The Fortune Society is set to develop and operate the project, and will provide support workers and peer-mentors for the tenants to help maintain a positive, healthy environment.

While the project is still deemed to be controversial, mayor Mamdani stated, “My sincere belief is that soon Just Home will be seen as clear evidence of New York’s commitment to a new era where every one of our neighbors, even those who have made mistakes in their past, is entitled to dignity and safety and to a home they can call their own.”

Currently, there is no exact timeframe for when the project will be completed. Mamdani and his administration are still working to secure details and ensure the project will be successful.
