Manhasset house searched by FBI, linked to former staffer Linda Sun

Tuesday morning, the FBI searched a Long Island home whose property records show it currently belongs to Linda Sun, a former deputy chief of staff to New York Gov. Kathy Hochul.

Sun left Governor Hochul’s office nearly two years ago.

Despite the presence of federal officers, which is always slightly jarring, NBC News states that “the nature of the investigation is unclear…no criminal charges have been filed”.

When prompted about the investigation, Hochul’s office, Brooklyn’s U.S. attorney’s office, and Sun’s husband declined to comment.

Before being employed under Hochul, Sun worked in state government for nearly 15 years. NBC News documents her career from 2009 to 2012:

“Sun was chief of staff to Grace Meng…a state assembly member from Queens…now a Democratic member of the U.S. House”.

Under Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s administration, Sun held three positions. This includes deputy superintendent at the state’s Department of Financial Services, deputy chief diversity officer and director of Asian American Affairs for the state’s Executive Chamber, and director of external affairs for Global NY at Empire State Development.

Sun’s government bio shows that she was appointed deputy chief of staff to Hochul in September 2021. NBC News says that, at the time, this placement made her the highest-appointed Asian American in the administration.

Leaving the governor’s office, Sun had a brief position as a deputy secretary in the state Labor Department. According to a source close to her departure, her employment was terminated after proof of misconduct had surfaced.

The nature of the supposed misconduct was never delved into.

The alleged proof was handed over to law enforcement, the source continued. Not authorized to discuss personal subjects publicly, the source The Associated Press spoke with requested to remain anonymous.

Quite obviously, this request was respected.

Flash-forward to 2023, Sun’s LinkedIn account showed she managed Austin Cheng’s campaign. Cheng is a Democrat who tried, unsuccessfully, to replace George Santos, R.N.Y, after the latter was expelled from the U.S. House.

Like every other person or group reached out to after the FBI raid, Cheng did not respond to forms of communication, in his case an email, seeking comments.

We will probably see more information regarding the investigation in the coming weeks. What’s to come is hard to say, but sources refusing to comment is never a good sign. This might turn into something that affects Sun for some time.
