Measles Outbreak and How to Combat It

It seems that measles has made its way to the United States, with hundreds of cases being reported in Texas and spreading to other states. While this disease isn’t as threatening to most adults, it can be a big problem for children and anyone who hasn’t been vaccinated. Knowing a few things about prevention could save you a lot of hassle and protect others from letting it spread.

The first major thing that should be investigated is whether you get vaccinated or not. Most people born after the 1950s have gotten their shots when they were little, but checking your vaccination records is a good way to make sure. Taking a blood test can also be a viable option. Make sure that your kids get their shots, as they are more susceptible to measles.

There are further actions that can be taken to ensure that the outbreak does not spread.

Routine hygiene practices can be of help, like washing your hands in public, covering your sneezes with a tissue, and not sharing the same dinnerware with someone else. Avoiding people who already have measles is another thing to take note of, with the best method of identifying the disease being to look for any signs of symptoms. Coughing, red eyes, runny nose, and fever are the easiest symptoms to pick out. Rash spots will also become apparent after a few days of initial symptoms. If you or someone you know has measles, make sure to quarantine away from others. All these tips may seem simple to most, but it is important to stay on it and help fight off the outbreak in any way that we can.
