Sparking recent controversy over the 31st Critics’ Choice Awards, fans are outraged that Michael B Jordan was not awarded Best Actor. Nominated for the film, “Sinners” (2025), where Jordan played dual roles of the characters, Smoke and Stack, many fans and critics alike cite that Jordan’s performances have redefined the genre of horror as we know it today! Bringing heart, emotion, and life to the film, many believed that Jordan was sure to win and take home the title of Best Actor at the 31st Critics’ Choice Awards.
However, Jordan lost the title to Timothée Chalamet for his performance in “Marty Supreme,” also released in 2025. Leaving many fans stunned and enraged, many people are citing this incident as a “snub” for Jordan and his legendary performances of both Smoke and Stack in the film, “Sinners”.
Taking to social media, one fan wrote, “Michael B Jordan deserved that , bro played twins to the point we thought it was two different ppl fr smh, I feel like Sinners getting ROBBED tn imo #CriticsChoiceAwards”. Reflecting similar thoughts, another fan wrote, “Michel B Jordan was robbed. He should have won Best Actor for Sinners. #CriticsChoiceAwards2026”.
This decision is made even more glaring when considering that the film, “Sinners,” is the most nominated film in the history of the Academy Awards. Surpassing the previous record of 14 nominations from the films “All About Eve” (1950), “Titanic” (1997), and “La La Land” (2016), the film “Sinners” earned a record amount of 16 nominations for a single film.
Taking this into account, many fans believe that this decision reflects bias and even racial discrimination amongst the judges for the Critics’ Choice Awards. Unwilling to award an actor who not only played dual roles but also ensured that both characters were distinct and unique, the decision to instead award an actor who only played a single role does little to go against the racist accusations.
To say that this decision was a shock to me would be an understatement to say the least. After having seen “Sinners” when it was originally released, I instantly fell in love with the film due to Jordan’s performances alone. Knowing that he lost the title of Best Actor to Timothée Chalamet is rather disappointing in our current society. However, despite the saddening news, I take comfort in knowing that the fans of the film undoubtedly recognize and praise Jordan for his performance.
