Michigan Reigns Supreme

I mean, who would’ve thought? Just three years ago, the Michigan Wolverines sunk to new lows after falling to an 8-24 regular season record—-the worst record in the franchise’s history. Now, they’re standing atop the men’s basketball league chopping down the net and raising the trophy as the 2025-2026 NCAA Tournament Champions.

Last night, Michigan and UConn met in a clash of the titans as UConn sought their third championship win in the last four seasons. Despite this stat, the Huskies entered the contest as +7.5 underdog. The Wolverines absolutely crushed all of their opponents en route to the final—even defeating a two-loss Arizona, 91-73, in the Final Four. The Huskies barely scraped by both a formidable Michigan State and tough Duke en route to the final—so it was clear that the odds were stacked against them.

Michigan skyrocketed to an early lead in the beginning of the first half before the Huskies battled back. The two squared things at 25 before Michigan took a slight lead at the end of the first half. Both teams had their fair share of scoring droughts throughout the game, but it was Michigan’s offense that managed to pull through and create some separation near the midpoint of the second half. The Wolverines led by as many as 11 points, and their commanding defense stunted a potential late comeback by the Huskies. While UConn managed to cut Michigan’s lead to four points in the final few seconds, the damage had already been done. UConn’s infamous win streak after reaching the Sweet 16 of the tournament came to an inevitable end, and Michigan arose as the new NCAA Champions, achieving their first title in 37 years in a 69-63 victory over the Huskies.

Both defenses played tremendously considering how each team performed throughout the tournament. UConn held Michigan to their lowest score of the entire tournament at 69 points, and faced the lowest deficit of any team that the Wolverines faced.

Dan Hurley, while admitting the loss was tough, accepted defeat and showed immense gratitude for his team after such a successful season. He made it quite obvious that he wasn’t the most happy with the game’s officiating, but his response to the affair was nothing short of classy and sportsmanlike.

And while UConn showed great heart, Michigan was just the better team. The Wolverines dominated in almost every game that they played and showcased why they were a 1-seed. The team’s ability to turn things around after a disastrous 2023 season is quite remarkable, and their determination and poise led them to becoming the top dogs of the Big Dance as they proved why they are the best team in the nation
