The thought of implanting robotic enhancements into our bodies has always been a concept of science fiction, but things like Neuralink and other projects hit us with the realization that this is now a possibility. More specifically, putting a microchip into our brains is in early development and might be something that allures interest. However, this suggestion will forever feel taboo to me, regardless of its development.
There are some interesting applications of such a device that do warrant acknowledgment. Being able to control electronic devices with your thoughts sounds cool, and there are many ways this technology could be used to advance mankind to the next level. However, we often forget just how powerful our brains are. The human brain is nature’s best supercomputer, and just like actual computers, there can be unforeseen consequences of installing new hardware.
Several things could go wrong. The surgery needed to get the microchip in your head is a risky proposition, seeing as this procedure is unique and could spawn all sorts of problems. Looking past that, the device could be misused by nefarious people who would love nothing more than to take advantage of someone’s privacy. While there is nothing apparent that suggests that hacking will be an issue, it is not something that should be ignored.
I would honestly feel better if the microchips were to be an implant located outside of the head, not buried inside somewhere that can’t be reached. Until such alterations are made, I’m not sure if we are ready yet for this kind of technology. Safety must be the number one priority moving forward with these microchips and I hope that the ones developing them agree.
