There must be something in the water—because it seems like kids are becoming increasingly violent by the day. Violence between children has increased within the past decade, and an incident occurring at a middle school in the Bronx area adds to these concerning numbers. An 11-year-old girl was taken into custody after stabbing a 12-year-old boy in his left arm with a kitchen knife.
It is unclear what exactly sparked the assault, but it was revealed after further investigation that the boy and girl involved in the incident had a dispute that occurred prior to the morning of the crime. The tension between the two was said to have “boiled over” and led to the attack leaving the boy injured before being transported to a nearby hospital. The boy is currently in stable condition and being treated for his injuries at the Lincoln Medical Center. His left arm was lacerated.
It is uncertain where exactly the 11-year-old girl acquired the knife. She was taken into custody after the incident, and it is unknown what her consequences are going to be as a result of the explosive affair. There have been no charges filed as of yet. The Department of Education weighed in on the tragic altercation, stating that mental health counseling and support will be offered by the school to prevent anything like this from happening in the future.
Safety concerns have arisen as the school does not have metal detectors installed to alert officials of any weapon that could potentially be brought into the school. While the school has around 800 students, there is only one security guard that handles school conflicts and security issues.
Another incident occurred at a school in Queens where an 11-year-old student sprayed pepper spray in the cafeteria. There were two 12-year-old students, a boy and a girl, who were injured as a result. The pepper spray was eventually recovered by police officers, and the student who released the spray was taken into custody.
The growing cases of assault transpiring in public schools has many concerned about the safety measures that are being taken to protect the children, with some believing that there should be more alarms installed to alert school officials and personnel in cases of emergency.
