More People should be talking about Netflix’s “Tires”(Op-Ed)

In May, Netflix released the first season of its newest comedy series “Tires”. SNL Alum Shane Gillis’ co-created the show alongside Steve Gerben and John McKeever. Gerben and Gillis star in the show as a disorganized and chaotic employee-employer duo. Gerben plays Will, who is the new boss at an auto body shop after his father gave him the reins. Gillis plays Shane, a lazy and goofy member of his staff who always seems to help mess things up.

Gillis carries the same unhinged behavior displayed in his standup into “Tires”. He is constantly making insensitive gestures and jokes, all done in a playful manner. This show feels like a breath of fresh air for Netflix, who usually doesn’t go for this kind of humor.

“Tires”feels very off the cuff, seemingly just banter between friends a lot of the time. But this creates a “The Office” type of awkwardness and realness that makes it even more hilarious.

Gillis actually funded the series by himself as he told Barstool’s “Pardon My Take” podcast.

“That was hard about SNL, is having zero creative control really. I never work with other people, it’s always me and my friends.”

This season is full of cameos from other stand-up comics who Gillis has befriended, like Andrew Schulz, Stavros Halkias, and Francis Ellis. The chemistry between these guys is evident and their comedic timing is right on point making for some true laugh out loud moments.

For anyone who has worked with their friends before, this show really captures what it’s like to fool around with your buddies at the office, even when you’re supposed to be hard at work. This realness really puts the cherry on top making it one of the funnier shows I’ve seen this year.

“Tires”season 1 is available on Netflix now.
