The recent launch of Artemis 2 is the first long step in NASA’s plan to establish the world’s first lunar colony. This marks the first time humanity has returned to the moon since the 1970s, and an event that has had a massive amount of buildup in the past few years. However, the most interesting turn of events is the interest the Trump administration has in this project.
NASA has hardly ever been in the good graces of the Trump administration. It was one of many government departments subjected to budget cuts by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) last year. Until now, the administration has focused all of its power on funding the United States military and its efforts in foreign conflicts within the Middle East.
That said, the Artemis 2 mission has clearly changed something. Typically, NASA projects have been a great avenue for creating uniting messaging due to how the industry collaborates with other countries. Additionally, it fosters a form of positive nationalism among the populace. NASA seemingly used this fact to its advantage, marketing this as a show of the United States might and as a way to fulfill Elon Musk’s long-talked-about project to get humans to Mars.
SpaceX remains an integral part of any space operation within the United States. The journey towards Mars seemed like an almost impossible endeavor as the years went by. However, NASA’s lunar colony project has given Musk the perfect stepping stone to see his future dream come true, even if it doesn’t happen in his lifetime. Backing a successful lunar colony would give him and the Trump administration a large positive footnote in future history books.
