New York’s Overtime Stand: Why Taking the Lions Down to the Wire Matters

The New York Giants lost to the Lions during overtime yesterday with a score of 34 to 27. Still, this game showed the team has made some progress despite the struggles they’ve faced this season. Even though they lost the game, they showed that they can keep up and compete with one of the strongest offenses in the league.

Detroit did ultimately end the game during the first play in overtime with Jahmyr Gibbs running 69 yards to score a touchdown. He made a total of three touchdowns, which is a great feat for him to accomplish. Amon-Ra St. Brown also ran through the Giants’ defense for 11 yards and scored one touchdown for the Lions.

Still, New York had an incredible lead against the Lions due to the offensive plays made. Jameis Winston, for one, had one of the best games he’s had this whole year. He passed the ball to Wan’Dale Robinson for a touchdown, as well as to Isaiah Hodgins. He also scored a touchdown of his own during a trick play. That’s two passing touchdowns and one receiving touchdown to add under his belt.

The Giants also kept up a fighting spirit late in the game. They were close to making a first down in overtime before Winston was sacked by Aidan Hutchinson. That sack ultimately ended the game for them.

Although the Giants once again didn’t finish the job and win despite getting a lead in the game, the performance during this game matters. They held the ball for more than half the game. They kept up with a Detroit team that has some great offense. They also showed they can create big plays, respond under pressure and push a playoff level team to the limit.

Obviously, this loss doesn’t change the fact that the Giants have faced some problems during this season, but it does show that their roster has talent and potential by taking the Lions to overtime. It shows that the team belongs on the same field as a top opponent and can keep building toward something stronger.
