No one is above the law and politics. It’s common to hear people claim that they stay out of politics or that they’re above it altogether. Politics can be exhausting and divisive, but the fact of the matter is that politics governs every aspect of our lives, from taxes to basic human rights.
Choosing not to take part in politics is a privilege. Not caring about politics or who is elected is a privilege. Marginalized communities don’t get to just “not care” when laws are passed that can directly affect them. Workers also don’t get to ignore new policies that affect their wages or working conditions. Also, women can’t simply tune out legislation, given that many laws have been considered to take their rights from their bodies.
When everyday people choose not to take part in politics, they’re given the power to make a change. Even if you think you won’t feel the consequences of policymaking, other people are.
Not engaging in politics doesn’t make you neutral or moderate; it makes you complicit in whatever laws are passed and whoever takes office. Whether you like it or not, not choosing to vote and not choosing to partake in politics in general has an effect.
No one is above politics, but everyone has the power to shape it. So don’t be a coward and opt out. Spend a few minutes researching candidates before you decide who to vote for. Don’t just fall for misinformation on social media. Have the decency to use your power for good.
