No Respect For Theater

Constantly, I feel as if the art and craft of theater is often the punchline in our current media and society.  If you are caught singing a popular song from Broadway, you are quickly labeled as a “theater kid”. Additionally, if you are expressing your enjoyment and appreciation for theater, you are promptly labeled as a “drama kid”.  And do not mistake these for compliments.

Often grouped together, “theater kid” and “drama kid” are stereotypes of kids and teenagers who enjoy the art of theater and live performances, often to an excessive and annoying level.  In our society, no one wants to be labeled as a “theater kid” or a “drama kid”.  Yet, I wonder why this is?

Theater has the opportunity to bring life to a story before one’s very eyes.  Actors dedicate their time, energy, and efforts to memorize their lines and choreography to deliver a beautiful story.  The ensemble composes and orchestrates original and compelling music to elevate and help communicate the story on the stage.

And yet expressing and showcasing such enjoyment and appreciation for the effort of such talents means you are either a “theater kid” or a “drama kid”.  Why the disrespect?

While I am new to the theater scene, I have recently watched “Hamilton” (2015) and absolutely loved it!  To avoid going into too much detail, as this is not a “Hamilton” article, all I will say is that I understand the hype and appreciation for the musical.  It really is indescribable when you watch everything come together on the stage.  Joy? Happiness? Perhaps something more?  I do not think I possess the words to convey such an undescribed feeling.  And this is all thanks to the talent on and behind the stage.
