Obesity Rates Have Declined as Weight Loss Drugs See More Use

In a recent survey conducted by Gallup Poll that was published this Tuesday, the obesity rate for adults in the United States went down from its record high. In 2022, 40% of adults in the United States were obese, but in 2025, that rate had shifted to 37%.

As part of this same survey, it was discovered that the rate of adults who make use of weight loss drugs has sharply increased over the past year. In February of 2024, only 5.8% of American adults used weight loss drugs, but that percentage has been raised to 12.4%.

Despite the decrease in the number of obese adults over the years, it is still not certain if the trend will continue due to new cases and access to the medication. Currently, the most available method is injectables, but there have been reports that pills are being developed.

Gallup has said in a statement, “Expanding access to these treatments may be an important factor in determining whether the current decline in obesity becomes a lasting trend, since despite recent declines the U.S. obesity rate remains very high by historical standards,”.

It was also noted in the survey that the percentage of Americans with diabetes has not gone down but has increased. The rate has actually reached an all-time high of 13.8%. This is somewhat expected as Diabetes is a chronic disease that cannot be cured, while being overweight can be changed over time.

Hopefully, the rate of obesity can fall even further, without the requirement to use medication to lose the weight.
