Respecting the dead is a moral found in many cultures across the world. In America, it is a crime to desecrate the graves of the dead. However, in a recent Truth Social Post, President Donald Trump saw fit to give an unsubstantiated statement, claiming that the death of Rob Reiner was because he was outspoken against Donald Trump.
The post on Truth Social goes as follows: “Rob Reiner, a tortured and struggling, but once very talented movie director and comedy star, has passed away, together with his wife, Michele, reportedly due to the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a mind crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME.”
Trump continues his statement, “He was known to have driven people CRAZY by his raging obsession of President Donald J. Trump, with his obvious paranoia reaching new heights as the Trump Administration surpassed all goals and expectations of greatness, and with the Golden Age of America upon us, perhaps like never before. May Rob and Michele rest in peace!”
These statements are completely uncalled for and disrespectful in my opinion to the family of Rob Reiner and his memory. While the president said in his statement he wished for Rob and his wife to rest in peace, saying his political beliefs were responsible for his death gives the opposite impression.
As the President of the United States of America, he should have a responsibility to act with decorum and have respect for anyone he communicates with. However, as seen with his statement, he is willing to use the deaths of beloved figures to push a political agenda, regardless of what that means for the family of the deceased, who are still mourning the loss.
Based on the information available, the murder was, in my opinion, a family dispute turned violent and had nothing to do with the President or his politics. To make the death of Rob Reiner a political matter about yourself is incredibly disrespectful to his memory and is not the behavior one should expect of one of the most powerful leaders in the world.
Reiner’s films held a special place in my heart, and I sincerely hope that the family of Rob Reiner is ok and that the murderer is brought to justice. May he and his wife rest in peace.
