Athlete of the Month for May 2025

Bio

Peter Morgan Alonso is an American professional baseball player. Born in Tampa, Florida, Alonso began laying sports at an early age including lacrosse and football before focusing on baseball in highschool. 

After highschool, Alonso played baseball at University of Florida, as the first baseman for the Florida Gators and briefly for the Bourne Braves in the summer during 2015.

Alonso was picked by the The New York Mets during the second round of the 2016 Major League Baseball debuted with the minor league team the Brooklyn Cyclones. A year later Alonso played for the St. Lucie Mets, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, and the Las Vegas 51s.

He debuted as the first baseman for the New York Mets in 2019 and became well known for his homerun records. Alonso became the first player in MLB history since 1900 with 11 extra-base hits in his first 10 career games and later won the  National League Rookie of the Month Award for April.

By June, Alonso broke the National League record for most home runs by a rookie before the All-Star break and Mets rookie home run record. Additionally he also won that month’s Rookie of the Month Award.

By 2024, Alonso became the fourth fastest player in MLB history to hit 200 home runs and the fourth Mets player to hit 200 career home runs. That same year Alonso would pass Mike Piazza’s  third place spot on the Mets all-time home run list.

Alonso would extend his contract with the Mets for two years starting 2025.
