Piracy’s Impact on the Music Industry

Piracy has forever been an issue for artists in any field of entertainment. The allure of free music without any need for subscriptions or other forms of payment is often too enticing for some. Although the negatives are pretty apparent, the rise of this activity is due to the rise of pricing that created a cause and effect on piracy.

It’s not shocking to say that things are expensive right now. Many luxuries have inflated in price and have left many people with limited options. This is also true with music, as the production required to make songs has also become very expensive and time-consuming, which has led to higher prices on physical copies. This is usually why certain people decide to don their pirate hats, but many consequences aren’t considered.

The music industry is reliant on purchases of albums and streaming services, so pirated music can negatively affect artists and record labels. In fact, this kind of behavior is a contributing factor to why music is more expensive, since paying consumers then must pick up the slack. These financial losses can result in reduced job opportunities and investments, leaving only high-ranking songwriters and singers to get attention from record companies.

There are also consequences for the pirates themselves. You can get into a ton of legal trouble that can lead to being fined or even put in prison. Computer viruses can sneak their way in by downloading content through sketchy malware and websites. The risks are too great for pirated music to be worth the hassle. More piracy can only lead to more trouble for the perpetrator and the music industry as a whole.
