Politics in Pop Culture: Do Celebrities Really Make a Difference?

Do you remember last election season, when all of these celebrities were posting about voting for Kamala Harris? I know I do. It seems they start making posts about voting every year. However, the real question is: does their support help, or does it merely become a diversion from the important issues at play?

I’d confidently say that celebrities have a massive impact on the world around us. Let’s be honest, we’ve all seen fans change their hair to better suit something their celebrity crush said in an interview one time. This just goes to show that millions of people around the world look up to celebrities, following what they say and do as if it’s their gospel. I’m not surprised political campaigns would want to use that influence to their advantage.

I can admit that sometimes their support is helpful. They can encourage people to vote who wouldn’t normally do so, especially the younger generation.

Still, they’re not always helpful when they make these posts. Sometimes, people make their decision to vote for a candidate purely because their favorite celebrity told them to instead of agreeing with their ideas and plans for the future. Not to mention, a celebrity could get into a scandal or say something problematic, which could tarnish the campaign they were supporting.

Also, it doesn’t always feel right to listen to what a rich or famous person has to say about politics. It feels like they live in a completely different world compared to us regular people. That kind of thing can backfire. Instead of fostering support, it can cause some to become even more doubtful.

When it comes down to it, celebrities can help a campaign but shouldn’t be the center of it. The focus should be on real problems that affect everyday life, such as jobs, healthcare, education and safety. It’s totally fine for them to express their opinions and beliefs, but they shouldn’t be the ones leading the entire conversation.

Can they make a difference in politics? Sometimes, yeah. However, that can’t replace the ideas and leadership of a candidate and voters who are paying attention. Ultimately, it’s up to us to stay focused on what truly matters.
