The Scary Movie franchise is returning via reboot next year. According to The Hollywood Reporter, an announcement on the franchise’s return was made at this year’s CinemaCon. That said, recent news revealed that the original creators of the franchise, the Wayans brothers, Marlon Wayans, Shawn Wayans, and Keenen Ivory Wayans, will be returning to the production.
Marlon Wayans took to his Instagram to post the news. The three brothers added to the post with a separate statement.
“We couldn’t be more excited to be part of the new Scary Movie and to work together again. This is a franchise we created over 20 years ago. We remember people laughing in the aisles, and we hope to see that happen again. We look forward to working with Jonathan Glickman and his team at the new Miramax to bring these laughs back to theaters, where they belong. It’s a double reunion.”
The cult-classic movie franchise debuted in 2000 and continued until 2013, each film parodying popular horror movies of its time. The first film grossed $42 million domestically, and overall, the franchise has made almost $900 million.
The sixth installment in the franchise will be written by the Wayans brothers and produced by Rick Alvarez; however, the director is still unknown. Miramax CEO Jonathan Glickman expressed his excitement about the franchise’s return:
“We are thrilled to reunite Scary Movie with the Wayans brothers, the brilliant creators behind the beloved franchise,” said Glickman. “The timing is perfect to bring the series back to the big screen, and we’re lucky to have Keenen, Marlon, and Shawn’s unique comedic vision bringing it to audiences worldwide.”
Miramax has finalized a deal with Paramount Pictures, which will handle the movie’s global distribution. Although the plot for the Scary Movie reboot remains unknown, production is set to begin next year, with an official release expected in late 2025.
